Why Do Only Male Lions Have a Mane?

Only grown male lions have a mane. It starts to grow when they are about one year old. It gets bigger and darker as they get older. A big mane makes a lion look strong. Baby lions are called cubs. Cubs have no mane at all. Very young cubs even have small spots on their fur.
