Butterfly Coloring Pages

Some of these pages show one big butterfly with its wings spread wide. Others show butterflies on a rose, on a mushroom or flying over a garden.

The smiling butterfly and the butterfly on a hand are the easiest ones for little kids. The butterfly covered in patterns and the garden path take the longest of all these butterfly coloring pages. They have lots of tiny shapes for older kids and adults.

Every page is a free PDF for A4 or Letter paper. If you like nature pages, try our owl coloring pages next. For help with printing, see our printing guide.

Butterflies over the Garden Path

Four butterflies fly above a stone path. Flowers grow on both sides and an arch stands at the end.

How to Color Butterfly Wings

A real butterfly has the same pattern on both sides. The easy way to get this right is to go one shape at a time. Color a shape on the left wing, then the same shape on the right wing.

If you want your butterfly to look like a real one, try one of these.

  • Monarch. Orange wings with black lines and white dots along the edges.
  • Swallowtail. Yellow wings with black stripes.
  • Blue morpho. Bright blue all over.
  • Painted lady. Orange and brown with black and white spots.

Frequently asked questions

How many wings does a butterfly have?

Four. There are two bigger wings at the front and two smaller ones at the back.

Which page has one big butterfly to color?

Try the butterfly with open wings or the close up on the wings. Each one fills the whole page.

Why do butterflies land on flowers?

To drink. Flowers have a sweet juice called nectar, and a butterfly sips it with its long, curly tongue. You can see this on the page where a butterfly is drinking from a flower.
