Blue Jay Coloring Pages

Crested jays bury acorns, splash in a birdbath and sing on fence posts across these 30 sheets. Cartoon jays with round eyes and simple shapes open the set. One wears a knitted scarf in the snow and a baby jay pops out of its egg.

After that the birds look like real backyard jays. One parent feeds three hungry chicks, another jay comes in to land and two climb a birch tree. Six patterned sheets close out these blue jay coloring pages, made for patient older colorers. More feathered friends wait on our owl coloring pages.

Why a Blue Jay Looks Blue

Surprise! Not one blue jay feather has blue color inside it. Tiny bubbles of air in the feather bend the sunlight, and that makes it look bright blue to our eyes. Crush a feather or hold it up to a lamp and it looks gray or brown. To color a jay, use bright blue on the crest, back, wings and tail. Add black bars across the wings and tail, and keep the face and belly white or light gray.

Tape a finished jay to the window and watch for a real one stopping by.

Frequently asked questions

Which part of the world do blue jays call home?

They live in the eastern and middle parts of North America. They stay in woods, parks and backyards all year round.

So many acorns. Why?

Jays hide acorns in the ground to eat in winter. They forget some of them, and those acorns grow into new oak trees.

Good jay sheets for a young child?

The jay on the pumpkin, the two friends sharing a perch and the jay planting a seedling are the easiest to finish.

Can a blue jay copy other sounds?

Yes. Jays can copy the scream of a hawk. Scientists think it may scare other birds away from the feeder.
